{"id":1136,"date":"2017-12-27T16:50:30","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T22:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/steer.com\/?p=1136"},"modified":"2017-12-27T16:50:30","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T22:50:30","slug":"marathon-oil-teams-up-with-texas-am-to-further-research-on-unconventional-reservoir-recovery-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/txogamsn.txoga.org\/steer\/2017\/12\/27\/marathon-oil-teams-up-with-texas-am-to-further-research-on-unconventional-reservoir-recovery-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Marathon Oil Teams Up with Texas A&amp;M to Further Research on Unconventional Reservoir Recovery Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was recently announced that Marathon Oil will be working with the Texas A&amp;M Engineering Experiment Station to further knowledge and research on energy recovery practices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Texas A&amp;M petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering professors will be working with engineers, geologists and geophysicists from Marathon Oil to study advanced petroleum fluid flow processes and recovery techniques from unconventional shale plays in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using the information gathered, students will have the opportunity to gain new knowledge, setting them ahead in their careers following graduation from the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Randy Johnson, Marathon Oil\u2019s vice president of Integrated Performance, helped define the program and is on the program\u2019s steering committee. Jude Nwaozo, a senior reservoir engineer at Marathon Oil, serves as program manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt Marathon Oil, we\u2019re actively pursuing advanced research and state-of-the-art techniques that will enhance well performance across our resource plays, and improve the understanding of fluid flow and geologic influences, particularly in emerging basins that are early in the development cycle,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cTexas A&amp;M was selected because of their exemplary vision and capability to partner with us on this advanced technical research. Marathon Oil will provide subject matter experts from several disciplines to create a mutually beneficial knowledge sharing experience. This partnership will combine our practical work in the field with the talent and capabilities of this team from Texas A&amp;M to study fluid flow and geologic influences in complex unconventional reservoirs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a member of STEER, Marathon Oil is cognizant of the importance of furthering research efforts to improve the energy industry and assist our future workforce and leaders to learn about energy production using the most up-to-date information possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMarathon Oil is doing just what we expect it to do,\u201d says Omar Garcia, President of STEER. \u201cThey are using their resources to improve processes, and in turn help our future energy employees to have a head start in their knowledge of cutting edge technologies in the oilfield. Marathon has chosen a great partner in Texas A&amp;M University and we are excited to see what great outcomes will spur from this partnership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Dan Hill, current head of the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&amp;M University, is the principal investigator of the program. Dr. Marcelo Laprea-Bigott, a professor of engineering practice in the department, will work with Hill as project manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne thing that makes this a very unique research program is we are working very closely with Marathon Oil,\u201d said Hill. \u201cThey will share current practices, seismic information, microseismic monitoring of fracturing, rock samples and well data. The benefits to the department are many. The more we learn, the more we can pass on to our students, graduates as well as undergraduates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Total project funding includes $1.3 million per year from sources within TEES, Texas A&amp;M and the petroleum engineering department. A significant portion of the funding will support 15 graduate students. Other research staff will also be needed, including two or three post-docs, one lab technician and a part-time administrative assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program\u2019s scope is heavily tied to the research strengths of the engineering faculty at Texas A&amp;M. The endeavor has been divided into a handful of main areas. Within each area are different projects headed by one or more faculty members who will guide graduate student researchers. Each of these projects will have a Marathon Oil representative assigned as the main liaison, or mentor, to ensure research focus and provide needed resources.
