{"id":1389,"date":"2018-03-15T18:40:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T23:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/steer.com\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2018-03-15T18:40:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T23:40:20","slug":"this-is-what-a-miracle-looks-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/txogamsn.txoga.org\/steer\/2018\/03\/15\/this-is-what-a-miracle-looks-like\/","title":{"rendered":"This Is What A Miracle Looks Like"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid line-above\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>RoboCop.\u00a0 Terminator.\u00a0 \u00a0Yeah, they\u2019ve heard all that before.<\/p>\n<p>And in fact, if you saw someone stand up, wearing one of these, heading your way, your first instinct might be to look for the nearest exit\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_single_image wpb_content_element vc_align_center\">\n<figure class=\"wpb_wrapper vc_figure\">\n<div class=\"vc_single_image-wrapper   vc_box_border_grey\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vc_single_image-img attachment-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/imaginethat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/rewalk-147x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"300\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>\u2026but in fact, what you\u2019d be seeing, is one of the closest things to a miracle on this earth.*<\/p>\n<p>Because Paul Meyer, Dan Rose, Maria Rea or any of the other men and women who strap themselves into one of those exoskeletons, get up and walk across a room \u2013 are men and women who were told they\u2019d never walk again.<\/p>\n<p>Army Sergeant Dan Rose was on a mine-sweeping operation in Afghanistan, when a mine exploded.\u00a0 When he came to, he was upside down and his legs didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>When her car went off the road in rural Georgia, teacher Maria Rea was thrown seventy-five feet away, into a field, her hip and pelvis shattered, unable to walk.<\/p>\n<p>Police Officer Paul Meyer was on a training exercise, when a 110-foot tree fell over on him, paralyzing him from the waist down.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, now, they walk.<\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time though, that would not have been possible.\u00a0 The severity of their injuries would probably have meant, that the only way of getting around would have been in a wheelchair.\u00a0 What\u2019s changed that, is the exoskeleton \u2013 which is, in fact, a little like a skeleton you wear on the outside.<\/p>\n<p>Technically, it\u2019s a wearable \u201cdevice\u201d.\u00a0 It can be strapped onto, over legs, hips, torso, arms, all of the above.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t like armor, because it doesn\u2019t just sit there.\u00a0 But it isn\u2019t robotic either, because it doesn\u2019t do all the work for you.\u00a0 These exoskeletons have sensors and power \u2013 but they also require your \u201csensors\u201d and your \u201cpower\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty that goes into the making of an exoskeleton.\u00a0 One important part are the materials made possible by petrochemicals.\u00a0 Petrochemicals like ethylene and butadiene.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you don\u2019t spend 9 to 5 in a lab, those names might set your head spinning a bit.\u00a0 So here\u2019s how that works.\u00a0\u00a0 From crude oil or natural gas, we can make various chemicals (\u201cpetrochemicals\u201d like ethylene and butadiene) \u2013 from those chemicals, we can make various materials (like the ABS and polycarbonate in exoskeletons) \u2013 and from those plastics we can make, almost anything, it turns out.\u00a0 Like exoskeletons.<\/p>\n<p>Christy Smitheran, a physical therapist who teaches people how to use the exoskeleton device, has more than one story about someone who got up and walked across a room for the first time after their accident.\u00a0 After they\u2019d been told they\u2019d never walk again.\u00a0 Maybe after they believed they\u2019d never walk again.\u00a0 And they just cry.<\/p>\n<p>That isn\u2019t to say it\u2019s easy.\u00a0 Fifteen minutes in the exoskeleton and, as Smitheran says, you\u2019re \u201csweating buckets.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a workout.\u00a0 A hard workout.\u00a0 But for someone who\u2019s been told they\u2019ll never walk again, that workout is an unimaginable gift.<\/p>\n<p>But these exoskeletons are not workout machines.\u00a0 You put one on, so that you can walk across the room.
