Confluence Park Grand Opening

Update 01/17/2018: The grand opening ceremony for Confluence Park has been rescheduled for a later date. We will keep you informed of the new date and time as soon as it has been confirmed. Thank you for your patience.

01/12/2018 – San Antonio, TX: The grand opening ceremony for the newly-constructed Confluence Park will be held on Jan. 17 at 10:30 a.m. to noon at 310 W. Mitchell Street. The event is free and open to the public.

A benefit concert will be held following the grand opening starting at 7 p.m. at the Majestic Theater in downtown San Antonio. The concert will be headlined by Pink Martini.

Construction of the park began in May 2016. The San Antonio River Authority project totalled $13 million, funded by donations from various entities including BHP Billiton’s $2.4 million donation, among others.

“Investing in the San Antonio area is among the many goals of our organization and our membership,” says Omar Garcia, President of the South Texas Energy & Economic Roundtable (STEER). “We expect that the BHP Billiton Pavilion, as well as the many other educational facilities and features, will pave the way for visitors to learn about the local ecology, preservation and conservation efforts, and the importance of our local natural resources.”

Confluence Park, which is close to Mission Concepción, was once a vacant lot. It has been transformed into an interactive learning and recreational space. The park houses a site-wide water catchment system, multi-purpose educational center with an earthen roof, demonstration ecotypes, and allows visitors to enter hiking and biking trails along the Historic Mission Reach portion of the San Antonio River.

Designed by Lake|Flato, Rialto Studios and Matsys, Confluence Park will feature the BHP Billiton Pavilion. The impressive concrete pavilion is designed to collect and deposit rainwater into an underground storage tank. The stored water will be used to irrigate the 2.5 acre park. Using sustainable techniques, such as rainwater collection and solar power generation, Confluence Park is a truly unique and educational recreational space.

“This space will be used and enjoyed for years to come, with the benefit of self-sustainability, thanks to the generosity and community involvement of the many donors of this project including BHP Billiton,” says Garcia. “We are grateful to see so many businesses and individuals in the community showing support for projects that will better the San Antonio community.”

Will you be attending the grand unveiling of Confluence Park, San Antonio’s newest and most innovative recreational attraction?
